The universal LLC checklist (2026)

  1. ☐ Pick a name that ends in an LLC designator and is distinguishable on the state’s records.
  2. ☐ Reserve it if you will file later (optional almost everywhere).
  3. ☐ Choose a registered agent with an in-state street address (rules).
  4. ☐ File the formation document with the state and pay the fee (matrix).
  5. ☐ Publish a notice if your state requires it (3 states).
  6. ☐ Write an operating agreement (never filed).
  7. ☐ Apply for an EIN after the state approves the LLC.
  8. ☐ Calendar the yearly report and any extra tax.
  9. ☐ Skip the BOI report: U.S. companies are exempt (FinCEN, August 2026).
